Abia Church Cancels Wedding Amidst Controversy Over Pregnant Bride
Assemblies of God Church in Ehere, Ogbor Hill, Aba, Abia state faced upheaval yesterday as Reverend Eze Ogba refused to officiate the wedding of Mr. Isreal Kennedy and Miss Rose, citing the bride’s pregnancy as the reason.
In a surprising turn of events, the church, following tradition, mandated a pregnancy test for the bride, leading to the revelation of her pregnancy. Consequently, Reverend Eze Ogba publicly declared the cancellation of the scheduled wedding, causing a stir within the church premises.
Desperate attempts were made by both families to persuade the church board to reconsider its decision. Meanwhile, the priest engaged in a conversation with the distressed bride, who vehemently pleaded her innocence.
Undeterred by the setback, the families sought an alternative and promptly moved to a nearby church that willingly performed the wedding ceremony, including hosting the reception.
A member of the Assemblies of God Church, speaking anonymously, clarified that the tradition of the church strictly prohibits weddings involving pregnant brides, regardless of their status. He explained, “It is not a new thing. The groom and bride knew that the Church cannot join them in matrimony because the bride was already pregnant.”
While some members empathized with the families, considering the financial investments made in preparations, the church stood firm in upholding its principles. The families faced further consequences as both the groom and the bride were reportedly suspended in accordance with the church’s constitution.
Efforts to obtain a response from Reverend Eze Ogba were unsuccessful, as he was reportedly in a meeting during the visit to the church.
