Blast From The Past
Gambari’s failed past: US based human rights lawyer Ogebe poses at Kudirat Abiola Corner in New York
US based human rights lawyer activist and lawyer Emmanuel Ogebe today shared a Facebook post of a picture he took at Kudirat Abiola corner in New York in 2018.
Ogebe wrote: I was part of those who campaigned for the street naming against Gambari at New York City Council in 1997. I was the only northerner in the pro democracy group so I introduced myself and made my presentation in naming the street in front of the Nigerian mission to the UN after Kudirat Abiola. After I spoke some northerners from the mission came and were speaking Hausa to me. Afterwards I heard them telling their bosses that I may speak Hausa but I am not from the north. That was how petty they were. They wanted to discredit the prodemocracy movement then as a Yoruba affair because of June 12 and they were not happy that I as a non-Yoruba opposed to the Abacha regime.
