2027: Kwankwaso, Aregbesola Hold Talks in Lagos Amid Opposition Realignment

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso met with former Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola on Saturday at the latter’s residence in Lagos. The meeting, which Kwankwaso shared on social media, focused on national politics, governance, and the future of Nigeria’s democracy.

“This evening, I had the pleasure to visit the former Governor of Osun State and former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, at his residence in Lagos. The meeting afforded us the opportunity to engage in discussions on national politics, governance, and the future of Nigeria’s democratic landscape,” Kwankwaso posted on X.

Their meeting comes amid growing calls for the opposition to unite against President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections. Aregbesola, once a close ally of Tinubu, distanced himself from the president following disagreements over the second-term bid of former Osun State Governor Gboyega Oyetola. Oyetola, who succeeded Aregbesola as governor, was later appointed minister by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Kwankwaso, a two-term Kano governor and former minister, ran as the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections. His recent engagement with Aregbesola has fueled speculation about potential political realignments as the country moves closer to another electoral cycle.
