$2.3bn Siemens Power Project Transformers and Substations Arrive Nigeria
Electricity transformers and substations designated for the $2.3bn Siemens power project have touched down in Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in the endeavor, as announced by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, on Sunday.
This development follows months of delays and uncertainties after the Federal Government renewed the contract for the mega power project with the German government and Siemens.
Minister Adelabu attributed the setbacks to the COVID-19 pandemic and the unfortunate passing of the late Chief of Staff to former President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari, who played a pivotal role in spearheading the project. He emphasized that progress remained stagnant until the current administration, led by President Bola Tinubu, stepped in.
Initially signed in 2018, the memorandum of understanding between Nigeria and Germany aimed to revolutionize the country’s power transmission and distribution sectors. However, with the onset of the pandemic and subsequent political transitions, the project faced significant delays.
The project, designed to proceed in two phases, gained momentum only after the emergence of the Tinubu administration. Significant progress was made during discussions between Nigerian and German officials, culminating in the signing of an acceleration agreement to reignite the project.
The pilot phase of the project, which involved the importation of ten power transformers and ten mobile substations, has now been nearly completed. Five transformers have already been installed across various locations in the country, along with the installation of three mobile substations, with seven more to follow.
Looking ahead, Minister Adelabu outlined the next phases of the project, focusing on upgrading and expanding the transmission and distribution networks. This includes enhancing existing power transmission substations, establishing new ones, and upgrading transformers and power lines to bolster the national grid’s strength and reliability.
Assuring the public of the government’s commitment, Minister Adelabu reiterated President Tinubu’s dedication to realizing the project’s objectives, paving the way for improved electricity supply and distribution efficiency across Nigeria.
