ZLP Sweeps Abia LG Polls with 15 Chairmanship Wins, YPP Takes 2 Seats

The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) has secured 15 of the 17 available chairmanship seats in the Abia State Local Government Elections held on Saturday. The Young Progressives Party (YPP) claimed victory in the remaining two seats.

The results were announced at the headquarters of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) in Umuahia, where ABSIEC Chairman, Prof. George Chima, praised the electoral process as “free, fair, and credible.”

“We have fulfilled the responsibility for which we were inaugurated on September 5,” Chima remarked. “Despite a challenging timeline, we worked hard to raise public awareness of the elections across the state.” He highlighted the election’s inclusivity, noting that over 12 political parties participated—a significant achievement for the commission.

The local government elections, which included both chairmanship and councillorship polls, took place across Abia’s 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs). ZLP won chairmanship positions in Isiala Ngwa South, Isiala Ngwa North, Umuahia North, Umuahia South, Ukwa East, Ukwa West, Obingwa, Aba North, Aba South, Isuikwuato, Umunneochi, Arochukwu, Bende, and Ohafia LGAs, while YPP emerged victorious in Osisioma and Ugwunagbo LGAs.

Prof. Chima expressed gratitude for the peaceful conduct of the election, commending the collaboration among security agencies, political parties, and the voters. “I congratulate both the winners and the losers. In any election, there will be both, but what matters most is that Abia remains peaceful,” he said.

He also lauded ABSIEC’s efficiency, pointing out that the commission completed the process in just two months, a timeline that traditionally requires six to twelve months.
