Why UNIMAID Was Renamed After Buhari — Education Ministry Explains

The Federal Ministry of Education has clarified the reason behind the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University of Maiduguri, stating it was in recognition of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari’s unwavering commitment to education and national development.

The explanation was provided in an official statement released Friday by the Ministry’s Director of Press, Folasade Boriowo. According to the statement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the renaming during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session dedicated to honouring Buhari’s legacy.

President Tinubu hailed Buhari as a leader who prioritized national security, economic reform, institutional integrity, and anti-corruption efforts throughout his tenure.

“The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, CON, on behalf of the entire education sector, expresses deep appreciation to President Tinubu for choosing to immortalise the late President through this historic renaming,” the statement said.

The tribute session featured prominent figures including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, state governors, ministers, and other top government officials. Yusuf Buhari, son of the late President, responded on behalf of the family, expressing their gratitude.

The Ministry described the renaming as a symbolic gesture that underscores Buhari’s contributions to human capital development, highlighting signature initiatives like the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, the Treasury Single Account, the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, and key social investment schemes.

Dr. Alausa emphasized that the move reflects President Tinubu’s belief in education as the foundation of national progress and aligns with the developmental vision championed by Buhari.

“This gesture reaffirms the administration’s commitment to education as a cornerstone of sustainable growth and national identity,” the Ministry concluded.
