“Why I Will Retire After My Tenure” – Governor Alex Otti

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has announced that he will retire from politics after completing his tenure, firmly ruling out any future political ambitions, including a senatorial bid. Speaking at a reception in his honour organized by the Anambra Development Unions Association, Aba branch, Otti said his decision was final and urged the public to disregard ongoing speculations.

“When I finish my eight years here, I will retire. I am not going to Abuja,” the governor said, describing the rumours as baseless and misleading. He emphasized the need to pave the way for a new generation of leaders, citing the growing involvement of youth in politics. “We are no longer that young. Society is changing, and the young ones are rising. It’s time we give them the opportunity,” he added.

Governor Otti also used the occasion to revisit the controversial 2011 disengagement of 154 state civil servants, mostly teachers, assuring that the matter would be urgently reviewed by the State Head of Service. He hinted that those under 65 could be reengaged on a contract basis to help address the shortage of teachers in the state.

Describing the dismissals—reportedly carried out based on state of origin—as both unjust and illegal, Otti promised fair compensation for those not eligible for reengagement. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to fairness, justice, and correcting past wrongs.
