Why English Exam Was Delayed Into the Night, Says WAEC
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued an apology following a significant delay in the administration of the English Language Papers II and III in the ongoing 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Candidates were left frustrated across multiple centres after the exam, initially scheduled for 4pm on Wednesday, May 28, did not commence until 7pm and concluded at 9pm.
Earlier in the day, candidates had completed the Oral English Paper I in the morning and were left waiting for hours before the second and third papers were eventually distributed. Many students and schools expressed concern over the extended waiting period and the late-night finish, citing fatigue and disruption to their schedules.
In a statement signed by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of WAEC’s Public Affairs Department, the council acknowledged that operational difficulties led to the late start. The council explained that the delay stemmed from intensified efforts to prevent examination paper leakage, which introduced logistical and security challenges that hampered timely distribution.
“While maintaining the integrity and security of our examination, we faced considerable challenges primarily due to our major aim of preventing leakage of any paper,” WAEC stated. The council further noted that various logistical hurdles, security concerns, and socio-cultural factors contributed to the delay.
WAEC assured stakeholders of its ongoing commitment to high standards in examination conduct and expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to candidates, their schools, and families.
