We’re concerned Obi, Atiku are not working together ahead of 2027 — ADC
The African Democratic Congress has expressed concern over the failure of Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar to work together ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, spoke on Friday during the Morning Show programme on Arise Television, where he acknowledged growing worries about the lack of collaboration between the two leading opposition figures. He said the situation presents a challenge and a matter of concern for the ADC, though he stopped short of describing it as a major threat to democracy.
Abdullahi explained that the party is currently not focused on discussions around its presidential ticket. According to him, the ADC is concentrating on building strong nationwide structures that will enable it to effectively contest elections across the country.
He said no one within the party is presently engaged in talks about potential presidential candidates, stressing that the priority is to establish a solid presence in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. He added that this work has taken up much of the party’s attention in recent months, although leadership recognises that the issue of candidates will eventually need to be addressed.
The ADC spokesperson noted that when the time comes, the party may attempt to reach a consensus on its presidential candidate. If consensus proves impossible, he said the process would be opened up to allow interested aspirants to contest. Abdullahi emphasised that the issue goes beyond Atiku and Obi, as other individuals have also shown interest in the presidential race.
He further stated that the ADC is exploring multiple options, including discussions with other political parties, in an effort to build a strong and viable coalition ahead of 2027.
Earlier this month, Peter Obi said the ADC-led coalition was struggling because key issues such as zoning and the rotation of major political offices had not been resolved. Although Obi has not formally joined the party, Atiku Abubakar has already obtained his ADC membership card. Abdullahi has previously urged Obi to make a decision on joining the party, noting that the ADC has not yet adopted zoning as part of its internal arrangements.
