“We Have Been Denied Use of Eagle Square, Velodrome” — ADC Decries Alleged Attempt by Government to Frustrate Its National Convention

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that efforts to hold its national convention in Abuja are being hindered following the denial of access to two major public venues.

Party spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi said the ADC’s request to use Eagle Square has not received a response from authorities, while an alternative application for the Velodrome was declined.

“We have been denied use of Eagle Square and the Velodrome,” Abdullahi said, adding that officials cited a scheduled cycling championship as the reason for the Velodrome’s unavailability.

He did not disclose the party’s alternative venue for the convention.

The development comes amid internal tensions within the ADC and a dispute involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Despite the challenges, party chieftain Ralph Nwosu said preparations remain on track and the convention will proceed as scheduled on April 14.

“We have complied with all legal requirements, including notifying INEC,” Nwosu said. “Whether they attend or not is their decision.”

The party’s internal crisis is linked to a leadership contest between factions aligned with David Mark and Nafiu Bala, following Nwosu’s resignation as chairman in July 2025. INEC has withheld recognition of either faction pending a court ruling.

Tensions escalated earlier in the week when opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Aminu Tambuwal and Rauf Aregbesola staged a protest at INEC headquarters in Abuja. They accused the administration of Bola Tinubu of undermining opposition parties.

The Presidency has denied the allegation. Presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare said all political parties have equal rights under the law and rejected claims of interference.

ADC officials maintain that the convention will go ahead as planned, despite the venue challenges.
