US Applauds Nigeria Over Arrest of Ansaru Terror Group Leaders
The United States government has commended Nigeria for the successful capture of two senior leaders of the terrorist group, Ansaru.
In a statement released via the official X handle of the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, Washington described the arrests as a major milestone in the country’s ongoing fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
The suspects, identified as Mahmud Muhammad Usman (alias Abu Bara’a) and Mahmud al-Nigeri (alias Mallam Mamuda), were apprehended following coordinated security operations.
“We commend the Nigerian Government and security forces on the successful arrest of wanted Ansaru leaders, Mahmud Muhammad Usman (aka Abu Bara’a) and Mahmud al-Nigeri (aka Mallam Mamuda). This is a significant step forward in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and extremism,” the statement read.
Ansaru, a splinter group of Boko Haram, has been linked to multiple kidnappings, attacks on security personnel, and international terror networks. Security analysts say the arrests could weaken the group’s operational capacity in northern Nigeria.
The U.S. congratulated Nigerian authorities for what it described as an important success in regional counterterrorism efforts.
