UK Announces Road Closures, Airspace Restrictions for Tinubu’s State Visit

The United Kingdom will introduce road closures and expanded airspace restrictions in Windsor ahead of a state visit by Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, next week.

Tinubu is scheduled to arrive on Wednesday, March 18, accompanied by Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu. The visit will begin with a reception at Windsor Castle hosted by King Charles III.

In a statement, Thames Valley Police said it is coordinating security preparations with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the Royal Household and other partners.

Airspace restrictions over Windsor Castle, which normally operate year-round, will be expanded on March 18 from 7:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. The measures are part of a broader security plan for the visit.

Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall said the aviation restrictions are one component of the wider operation.

He noted that the force has extensive experience managing security for royal events in Windsor and that significant planning has gone into the arrangements for the visit.

Authorities warned that violating the airspace restrictions could constitute a criminal offence under the Air Navigation Order and may result in arrest.

Police will deploy officers with specialist capabilities across Windsor, including search teams, mounted units, road policing officers and armed personnel. Neighbourhood officers and Project Servator teams will also be present to engage with the public.

Security measures will include the use of Windsor’s closed-circuit television network, hostile vehicle mitigation barriers and other undisclosed safeguards.

Road closures and parking restrictions will begin on Tuesday, March 17, with possible temporary disruption to traffic in and around Windsor.

Police also urged the public to report suspicious activity through non-emergency line 101 or emergency number 999.

The operation is being supported by the Civil Aviation Authority and National Air Traffic Services to enforce the flight restrictions.
