Two Assistant Directors, Two Managers Among Victims of Afriland Towers Fire – FIRS
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has confirmed the death of four of its senior officials in the fire incident that engulfed Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos, on Tuesday.
In a statement issued by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS Chairman, the agency identified the deceased as Mrs. Ekelikhostse George (Assistant Director), Mr. David Sunday-Jatto (Assistant Director), Mrs. Nkem Onyemelukwe (Senior Manager), and Mr. Peter Ifaranmaye (Manager).
The officials were stationed at the FIRS Medium Tax Audit and Onikan Emerging Tax Office, located on the sixth and seventh floors of the six-storey tower.
> “It is with a heavy heart that FIRS announces the tragic loss of four of its staff members during the fire incident at Afriland Towers, Broad Street, Lagos,” the statement read.
According to FIRS, security and safety officials immediately alerted the fire service when the incident broke out, but thick smoke had already engulfed the building by the time responders arrived.
The agency described the loss as a devastating blow, noting that the late officers were dedicated professionals who had served with distinction. “The management and entire staff are in deep shock and sorrow. We are in touch with the families of our departed colleagues and will provide all necessary support at this trying time,” the statement added.
FIRS further disclosed that it is working closely with relevant agencies in Lagos to investigate the cause of the fire and will also review safety protocols across all its offices nationwide.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service earlier confirmed that nine people were rescued from the building. While five were successfully resuscitated, four were recovered unconscious.
