Truck crashes into building, kills sleeping FUOYE 300-level student in Ekiti
A 300-level student of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Promise Farotimi, has died after a heavy-duty truck ran into a residential building in Aramoko-Ekiti, Ekiti West Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
The incident occurred over the weekend at the Oke-Ila area of the town. The vehicle reportedly veered off course and crashed into a family residence where the victim was sleeping at the time.
The 21-year-old, who studied Building Technology, was confirmed dead at the scene.
His father, Rufus Farotimi, said the crash destroyed both his family home and his son’s life. He added that the family was left without shelter following the incident.
According to him, the truck driver fled immediately after the crash. Residents were able to apprehend the assistant, commonly referred to as the “operator boy.”
He said documents recovered from the truck showed it was transporting natural gypsum and carried a company identification linked to a driver named Shuaibu Yusuf.
Farotimi expressed concern that the driver had not yet been arrested days after the incident and called on authorities to intensify the search and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
The remains of the student were evacuated by security operatives, who also began an investigation into the crash.
Police spokesperson SP Abutu Sunday confirmed that the case has been transferred to the State Traffic Section for further investigation.
