Tragic Death of Pregnant Woman Sparks Controversy at Korede Hospital, Ogun State
In a harrowing incident that has raised questions and ignited controversy in Ogun State, a pregnant woman’s untimely demise has left her family and the medical community at odds. The husband, Oluwasola Oladunjoye, has accused Korede Hospital in Abeokuta of negligence and alleges that the hospital is responsible for his wife, Islamiat’s, death. However, the hospital vehemently denies these allegations.
Oladunjoye narrates the heart-wrenching events, stating that his wife passed away on a fateful Sunday due to complications stemming from a caesarian section (CS) performed by a medical team led by two doctors at Korede Hospital.
The husband claims that he was initially charged N300,000 for the CS and asked to pay an additional N15,000 for tests. He was required to make a deposit of N300,000 alongside the test fee. Trouble arose when he was called into the operating room. According to Oladunjoye, the second doctor demanded an extra N150,000, citing the baby’s poor condition as the reason for the additional charge.
Despite his reluctance to pay the extra amount, the doctor continued the operation. However, when Oladunjoye refused to yield to the demand, the doctor abruptly stopped. This caused Oladunjoye to leave the theatre momentarily.
Upon his return, he was shocked to find the same doctor donating blood to his wife, raising suspicions that something was amiss. Tragically, his wife passed away, and he alleges that the hospital management even called the police in an attempt to have him arrested.
The hospital’s chairman, Dr. Tayo Apampa, offers a contrasting account of the events. He asserts that Oladunjoye’s wife was brought to the hospital as an emergency case, emphasizing her precarious condition. According to Apampa, the doctors, out of concern for the emergency situation, proceeded with the surgery without receiving any payment.
During the operation, it was discovered that the scars from the woman’s previous surgeries had torn, leading to bleeding. The medical team took immediate action to address the situation. They conducted the surgery after confirming that her PCV (packed cell volume) level was suitable. However, complications arose after the surgery, and they sought blood from the hospital’s blood bank when relatives were unable to provide any.
In a desperate bid to save the woman’s life, one of the doctors donated his own blood. Despite their best efforts, the hospital staff tragically lost the patient.
The conflicting narratives surrounding this tragic incident have left the community and the authorities seeking answers. An investigation is likely to follow to determine the actual sequence of events and who, if anyone, bears responsibility for the tragic loss of a young mother’s life.
