Tinubu Revives School Feeding Program, Shifts Oversight to Education Ministry

In a move to address the growing crisis of out-of-school children and enhance educational outcomes, President Bola Tinubu has reinstated the school feeding program and directed its transition from the Humanitarian Ministry to the Education Ministry.

Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman unveiled this strategic shift during a workshop focused on advancing education initiatives. The program, previously halted under former President Muhammadu Buhari, will now be administered by the Education Ministry, with the dual objectives of providing nutritious meals to students and fostering increased attendance and improved learning.

President Tinubu emphasized the critical nature of this relaunch in combating the “learning crisis” and creating a more conducive educational environment for all children. Minister Mamman highlighted the workshop’s overarching objective: “to translate policies into actionable strategies, ensuring accountability among various organizations tasked with resolving the issue of out-of-school youth.”

The revival of the school feeding program is anticipated to tackle multiple challenges faced by out-of-school children, including hunger, poverty, and limited access to education. By offering daily meals and creating a welcoming environment, the program aims to incentivize enrollment and attendance, particularly in marginalized communities.

This initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s vision of leveraging the school feeding program to address the broader issue of out-of-school children and contribute to the overall improvement of the education system.
