Tinubu Orders Low-Key Celebration for Nigeria’s 64th Independence Due to Economic Challenges
In a bid to reflect the nation’s economic realities, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a low-key celebration for Nigeria’s upcoming 64th Independence Day, marking the second consecutive year the event will be scaled down. This decision was announced by Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), during a press conference on Thursday, September 26, 2024.
Senator Akume explained that the reduced celebration aligns with the “mood of the nation,” as Nigeria faces significant economic challenges. The federal government acknowledged the struggles of its citizens, particularly in light of tough economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies. These measures, though deemed necessary for long-term recovery, have contributed to the financial hardship many Nigerians are currently experiencing.
Reflecting on last year’s low-key Independence Day event, which also lacked foreign dignitaries due to economic constraints, Akume reaffirmed that this year’s decision underscores the administration’s sensitivity to the nation’s plight. He further emphasized that despite these challenges, President Tinubu’s government is working diligently to ease the immediate impact and create new opportunities through the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Among the administration’s key achievements, Akume highlighted the launch of the Presidential CNG Initiative (Pi-CNG), which recently rolled out its first batch of 30 hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses. This initiative aims to alleviate transportation issues while promoting cleaner energy alternatives.
During the briefing, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris praised President Tinubu’s efforts in implementing transformative policies. He described these initiatives as pivotal to correcting past economic missteps and positioning Nigeria as a future economic powerhouse.
Finance Minister Wale Edun also outlined the government’s focus on boosting domestic agricultural production to enhance food security. He stressed that increasing self-reliance in food production is a critical aspect of the government’s economic recovery strategy.
Additionally, Minister of Budget and National Planning, Alhaji Abubakar Bagudu, addressed the challenges posed by Nigeria’s rapidly growing population, which has surged from 119 million in 1999 to 230 million today. He emphasized that the increased demands for infrastructure, education, and healthcare must be addressed to ensure sustainable development.
