Tinubu Meets NLC Leaders in Last-Minute Talks to Avert Nationwide Protest
President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday night met with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Abuja as efforts intensified to avert a planned nationwide protest scheduled for Wednesday.
The meeting took place at the State House and was led on the labour side by the NLC President, Joe Ajaero. Discussions focused on issues raised by the union and possible steps to address workers’ concerns ahead of the proposed protest.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Mr Ajaero declined to confirm whether the protest would go ahead as planned. He said decisions of that nature could not be taken unilaterally and would require broader consultation within the labour movement.
He explained that the NLC leadership would reconvene to review the outcome of the discussions with the president and engage further with other stakeholders, including the governors’ forum. According to him, the labour leadership would meet early on Wednesday to deliberate and communicate its final position.
Mr Ajaero described the meeting as a consultation and said the outcome of internal discussions would determine the next line of action, adding that a clear decision would be announced after those deliberations.
