Tinubu Meets FBI Director in Abuja, Calls for Enhanced Collaboration
President Bola Tinubu has called for stronger collaboration between Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies and the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to tackle cybercrime, terrorism, and related offenses. This appeal was made during a high-profile meeting with FBI Director Christopher Wray at the State House in Abuja.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of this partnership in combating financial crimes and terrorism. He praised the FBI’s reputation for excellence and procedural sophistication, expressing honor at Director Wray’s visit.
President Tinubu highlighted his administration’s focus on education as a means to combat poverty, which he identified as a key driver of criminal activities. He also urged the United States to support developing countries with the necessary technology and knowledge transfer to tackle complex international crimes.
Among the key Nigerian security officials present at the meeting were National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, Director-General of the Department of State Services Yusuf Magaji Bichi, and the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Brigadier-General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd). Other attendees included Major-General Emmanuel Undiandeye of the Defence Intelligence Agency, EFCC Chairman Olanipekun Olukoyede, and National Counter Terrorism Centre Coordinator Major-General Adamu Laka.
President Tinubu underscored the significance of the FBI Director’s visit as a testament to the enduring partnership between Nigeria and the United States in the fight against financial crimes and terrorism. “Your visit conveys the importance of Nigeria and Nigerian partnership in the work of America’s law enforcement institutions and vice-versa,” he said.
Director Wray, reaffirming the strong ties between the two nations, commended President Tinubu for his commitment to counter-terrorism efforts and the re-engineering of the Office of the NSA to effectively coordinate these initiatives. He acknowledged the success Nigeria has achieved against terrorist groups in West Africa and assured continued support from the FBI.
“Our relationship with Nigeria is a very important one,” Director Wray stated, emphasizing the FBI’s dedication to assisting in areas such as counter-terrorism, cyber-enabled crimes, kidnapping, joint investigations, and intelligence sharing.
This meeting underscores a shared commitment to eliminating crimes locally and globally through enhanced cooperation and mutual support between the United States and Nigeria.
