Three Chinese Astronauts Stranded in Space After Debris Slams Into Return Capsule
Three Chinese astronauts have been left stranded aboard the Tiangong space station after their spacecraft was struck by space debris, forcing an abrupt delay to their planned return to Earth. The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) confirmed the incident on Wednesday, saying the Shenzhou-20 return capsule suffered a suspected impact just hours before its scheduled departure.
According to CMSA’s statement on Weibo, engineers are currently assessing the damage to determine whether the capsule can still be used for re-entry. “The safety of the crew is our top priority,” the agency said, adding that both the outgoing and incoming teams aboard Tiangong are safe for now.
The affected astronauts—Chen Dong, Wang Jie, and Chen Zhongrui—have been living on the space station since April 24. They were expected to return home on November 5, after completing a handover to the Shenzhou-21 crew, which arrived on October 31.
The Shenzhou-20 spacecraft consists of three sections: a propulsion module, crew living quarters, and a parachute-assisted return capsule. If the damaged return module is deemed unsafe for re-entry, CMSA may jettison it and rely on a backup plan. Under existing contingency procedures, the stranded astronauts could return to Earth aboard the Shenzhou-21 spacecraft, while another capsule would be launched to replace it.
While no injuries have been reported, the situation underscores the growing danger posed by space debris orbiting Earth. Even tiny fragments can cause serious damage to spacecraft traveling at thousands of kilometers per hour.
Despite the setback, the mission has already made history. Chen Dong, one of the stranded astronauts, has now spent over 400 cumulative days in orbit—the longest total time in space ever achieved by a Chinese astronaut. His record continues to grow as he and his crewmates await clearance to return home.
The incident mirrors challenges faced by other space agencies. In 2023, NASA astronaut Frank Rubio spent 371 days in space after his return capsule was damaged by a micrometeoroid. Earlier this year, astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams also faced extended missions due to technical issues with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft.
CMSA has not announced a new date for the Shenzhou-20 crew’s return, but engineers are racing against time to determine whether the capsule can safely bring the astronauts back to Earth—or if China will need to mount a rescue mission.
