Terrorists Strike Zamfara Community: 11 Dead, 20 Abducted, Mostly Women, Children
On Sunday, terrorists attacked the Gidan Zuma community in Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, leaving at least 11 people dead and 20 others abducted, according to residents.
Witnesses recounted that most of the abducted individuals were women and children, highlighting the harrowing toll of the attack. The assailants reportedly seized the opportunity when local vigilantes, responsible for the community’s defense, diverted their attention to aid a neighboring area besieged by a similar assault.
Gidan Zuma, situated just a few kilometers from Bungudu town, previously enjoyed relative safety owing to its robust local defense mechanisms. However, Sunday’s assault shattered this tranquility, leaving the community reeling from the unprecedented violence.
Detailing the chilling sequence of events, one resident, speaking on condition of anonymity for security reasons, revealed, “The attackers invaded the town on Sunday after they got a hint that our vigilante members went to assist the neighboring community that was under attack. The gunmen first killed five people at the entrance of the town and killed six others at the climax of their operation inside the town.”
Amidst the chaos, a distraught resident, whose wife and child were among those taken captive, shared his anguish with BBC Hausa service, recounting the heart-wrenching moment when his family was forcibly separated from him during the brazen raid.
The absence of a prompt response from local law enforcement agencies underscores the daunting security challenges faced by Zamfara State and its residents. When contacted for comment, the police spokesperson in Zamfara, Yazeed Abubakar, cited prior engagements and indicated he was yet to receive detailed information regarding the incident.
Zamfara, situated in the North-west region of Nigeria, continues to grapple with the scourge of terrorism, perpetrated by various armed groups commonly referred to as bandits. Despite the presence of security personnel, these terrorists operate with impunity, instilling fear and wreaking havoc on unsuspecting communities.
The mode of operation, often involving long convoys of motorcycles, allows the assailants to strike swiftly and vanish before authorities can intervene effectively.
