Teacher, Student Killed as Female Student Opens Fire at US School
A tragic shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday left two people dead and six others injured. The shooter, identified as 15-year-old student Natalie Rupnow, opened fire with a handgun shortly before 11 a.m., sending the small Christian school into chaos just a week before its Christmas break.
Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes confirmed that a teenage student and a teacher were killed in the attack. Two students remain in critical condition, while four others, including a teacher, were treated for less severe injuries. By Monday evening, two of the wounded had been released from the hospital.
The incident unfolded in a study hall, where a terrified second-grader made the 911 call that brought dozens of police officers to the scene within minutes. Responding officers found Rupnow with a self-inflicted gunshot wound; she died while being transported to a hospital. Authorities are investigating the shooter’s motive but have yet to determine whether the victims were specifically targeted.
Barbara Wiers, director of elementary and school relations at Abundant Life Christian School, praised the students’ response during the lockdown. “When they heard, ‘Lockdown, lockdown,’ they knew it was real,” she said, adding that the school had recently practiced safety drills.
The school, which serves around 420 students from prekindergarten through high school, does not use metal detectors but employs other security measures, including surveillance cameras.
Chief Barnes stated that police are speaking with the shooter’s family, who are cooperating fully with the investigation. He expressed the importance of taking time to gather accurate information, acknowledging that the shooter’s father is also grieving.
The first call reporting an active shooter came in at 10:56 a.m., prompting swift action from first responders who happened to be training nearby. Officers entered the building within three minutes of the call, Chief Barnes said.
Investigators believe Rupnow used a 9mm handgun, according to a law enforcement official speaking anonymously due to the ongoing investigation. Police continue to search the shooter’s home for further evidence.
“This community is hurting,” Chief Barnes said. “Every person in that building is a victim and will carry this tragedy with them forever.”
Parents and students were reunited at a nearby health clinic as officials worked to secure the area. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities search for answers in this devastating event.
