Super Eagles Goalkeeper Cleared of Match-Fixing Allegations
Tanzanian Premier League side Singida Black Stars SC has cleared Nigerian goalkeeper Amas Obasogie of match-fixing allegations after completing an internal investigation into the claims.
The 26-year-old shot-stopper had been placed on provisional suspension by the club in February following concerns raised after a number of mistakes in recent matches. The club said the decision was taken to allow its disciplinary committee review complaints from supporters, stakeholders and some club officials.
In a statement signed by the club’s Chief Executive Officer, Jonathan Kassano, Singida Black Stars confirmed that the investigation found no evidence linking the Nigerian international to match manipulation.
The club said it reviewed the available information and conducted internal checks before concluding that the allegations could not be substantiated.
Obasogie reacted to the development in a video posted on his Facebook page, expressing relief that the matter had been resolved and thanking those who supported him during the investigation.
The goalkeeper said he was grateful to everyone who reached out to him during the period of uncertainty, including friends, fans and colleagues who contacted him through phone calls and social media.
He also thanked the Nigeria Football Federation for believing in him and standing by him throughout the process. Obasogie added that the support he received from people around him helped him remain hopeful while the investigation was ongoing.
The goalkeeper acknowledged several individuals who backed him publicly, including the Director General of the National Institute of Sports and former Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, as well as family members and other football stakeholders.
Obasogie also expressed appreciation to Singida Black Stars for conducting the investigation and clearing his name. He thanked his captain, teammates and the club’s supporters for their encouragement during the period he was away from action.
The suspension had been announced in a disciplinary statement issued by the club on February 27 while the probe was ongoing. Shortly before the suspension, Obasogie featured in Singida Black Stars’ 1–1 league draw against Namungo.
Obasogie has been part of the Super Eagles setup for about three years and was included in Nigeria’s squad that finished third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
With the investigation now concluded and the allegations dismissed, the Nigerian goalkeeper is expected to return to action for Singida Black Stars as he resumes his professional career without the allegations hanging over him.
