“Stop Destroying People’s Property,” Peter Obi Tells Federal, State Governments

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly criticized the ongoing demolition of private properties by various government agencies across Nigeria, describing the actions as insensitive and unlawful.

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi condemned the destruction of citizens’ homes, shops, and goods, stressing that such actions—often carried out without prior notice—inflict needless hardship on already struggling Nigerians.

He noted that many of the affected properties contained goods worth billions of naira, representing years of investment and hard work. According to him, it is unacceptable for any government to destroy private property that is not being used for criminal purposes without due process.

Obi questioned whether these demolitions truly serve the public interest or simply reflect an arbitrary use of power. He urged authorities to prioritize compassion, especially at a time when millions of Nigerians are facing economic hardship.

“The recent demolition of citizens’ structures and the destruction of their goods and merchandise remain condemnable,” Obi said. “An administration whose policies have plunged millions into poverty should not add to their suffering through reckless demolitions.”

He warned that such actions send a dangerous signal to entrepreneurs and investors, suggesting that their efforts and sacrifices can be erased overnight. Obi called on all levels of government to ensure that urban development and enforcement efforts adhere to the rule of law and protect citizens’ rights.

“If we fail to stand against such injustices, we risk undermining the very foundations of economic growth and social stability,” he said, emphasizing that every Nigerian deserves the right to earn a living through honest work without fear of losing their property arbitrarily.
