Several Injured as Church Collapses During Sunday Service
A church building collapsed during Sunday worship in Mutum-Biyu, Taraba State, leaving several people injured. The incident occurred at the United Methodist Church of Nigeria (UMCN), located behind the Police Divisional Office in the town, which serves as the headquarters of Gassol Local Government Area.
According to local sources, the collapse happened during a heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds. Worshippers were gathered inside the church when the structure gave way. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.
Those injured in the collapse were quickly taken to the Mutum-Biyu Referral Hospital for treatment. Worshippers who suffered fractures were referred to a local traditional bone setter in the town. Alhaji Baffa Wanzami, speaking over the phone, confirmed that he received three individuals, including a young girl, who had sustained fractures to their arms and legs. He said he had already begun treatment on them.
“It is very sad that some worshippers were injured while others got fractures when the church they were conducting service in collapsed. Some of those that got fractures, including a little girl, were brought to me and I set their fractured bones,” Wanzami said.
Residents also reported that the windstorm damaged several houses in the area. Musa Adamu, a local resident, confirmed that parts of the town suffered additional structural damage as a result of the severe weather.
