Satguru Maharaj Sets Conditions to Help Free Nnamdi Kanu
Satguru Maharaj, founder of the One Love Family, has set conditions for facilitating the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Speaking in an interview with his temple’s radio on Wednesday, Maharaj said he would assist in securing Kanu’s release if Biafra radio broadcasts are stopped and the sit-at-home orders are lifted.
Maharaj emphasized that Kanu was legally culpable for the terrorism charges brought against him, which, under Nigerian law, could have warranted the death penalty. He explained that Kanu’s current imprisonment reflects a political decision rather than a legal reprieve, stating, “It has to be by political settlement before he can be released. For anyone advocating for his pardon, they must take positive steps, including stopping Biafra radio and the sit-at-home orders, and respecting the court judgment while Igbo elders engage with the President behind the scenes.”
The cleric also highlighted the broader political context, noting that recent actions by President Tinubu have brought the Igbo into central political focus, but that some Northern factions are uneasy about this development. He urged an end to fears of Islamisation in the East, saying that once these concerns are addressed, Kanu’s release could be facilitated.
Maharaj joins Abia State Governor Alex Otti, activist Omoyele Sowore, and other South-East leaders in efforts to secure Kanu’s release through political channels, assuring residents that “all hope is not lost.” Governor Otti recently visited Kanu in Sokoto prison and later met with President Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, as part of ongoing negotiations.
Kanu is currently serving a life sentence on multiple counts of terrorism, handed down by Justice James Omotosho. He also received a 20-year sentence on one count and a five-year sentence on another, all without the option of a fine.
