Residents Mourn the Passing of 84-Year-Old Crocodile in Ibadan

Residents of the Oje area in Ibadan, under the Ibadan North East local Government, were gripped with sadness as news spread of the demise of an iconic crocodile that had been a fixture in the community for 84 years.

The crocodile, a beloved attraction at the renowned Delesolu’s Palace in Ibadan, passed away on Thursday, leaving locals nostalgic for its presence.

Chief Raufu Yusuff Delesolu (Ayingun Olubadan), head of the family and a highly respected figure in Ibadan, reminisced about the crocodile’s history, stating that it was brought to the Igbejo Delesolu in 1940. “Since then, it has been in Delesolu’s compound until its demise today,” he remarked.

Contrary to speculations, Chief Raufu clarified that the crocodile was not worshipped as a deity but was instead cherished as a pet by their forefathers. He described how people from various backgrounds, including Europeans and Africans, visited the crocodile, feeding it and marveling at its presence.

The passing of the crocodile marks the end of an era for the community, which had grown accustomed to its unique presence. Nevertheless, Chief Raufu expressed determination to preserve the heritage of their forebears, hinting at the possibility of acquiring another pet to continue the legacy.

Amidst the grieving process, preparations are underway for the burial of the crocodile, with family members and locals mourning the loss of this beloved reptile. As objects are laid out in readiness for its final resting place, the community reflects on the significance of the crocodile’s role as a cultural symbol and tourist attraction in Ibadan.
