Rare Medical Case: Man Carried Knife in Chest for Eight Years Without Knowing
Doctors in Tanzania have discovered a medical case that has stunned both the public and the medical community: a man lived with a knife lodged in his chest for eight years without knowing it.
The 44-year-old patient, who arrived at Muhimbili National Hospital complaining of pus discharge from his right nipple, had no symptoms typically associated with such a serious condition. He denied chest pain, difficulty breathing, cough, or fever, but he did recall being attacked in a violent fight nearly a decade earlier, when he sustained several stab wounds. At the time, doctors sutured his injuries, and because the hospital lacked radiological equipment, no X-ray was performed. His wounds healed and he went on with life unaware that a knife was still inside him.
When his current symptoms persisted, doctors ordered imaging tests and were astonished to see the outline of a large knife embedded in his chest. The object, which had entered through his right scapula, had somehow missed all major organs, allowing him to live without pain or complications until now. The pus discharge, physicians explained, was caused by dead tissue building up around the foreign object.
Surgeons successfully removed the knife along with the surrounding infected tissue. The patient spent 24 hours in intensive care before being transferred to the general ward for a 10-day recovery period. Follow-up checks showed that he was healing well and had no further complications.
The case, recently detailed in the National Library of Medicine, has drawn international attention for its rare and almost unbelievable circumstances.
