President Tinubu Set to Withdraw Nomination of Ruby Onwudiwe for CBN Board Membership – Report

In a development yet to be confirmed, President Bola Tinubu is reportedly retracting the nomination of Dr. Ruby Onwudiwe as a member of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Board.

President Tinubu, through a letter addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, which was disclosed during a session at the National Assembly, had initially proposed Onwudiwe as the South East representative on the apex bank’s board.

However, following the circulation of screenshots purportedly showing Onwudiwe’s past support for the opposition Labour Party (LP) and its Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during the last election, protests erupted among supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). These protests reportedly reached President Tinubu through key party officials, including Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and Chairman of the Appropriation Committee Olamilekan Solomon Adeola.

Subsequently, President Tinubu swiftly requested the Senate to withdraw Onwudiwe’s nomination, emphasizing the need for a candidate with the requisite qualifications and without political affiliations.

This latest development comes amidst President Tinubu’s recent efforts to appoint new members to the CBN board, with Onwudiwe’s nomination being a replacement for Mr. Kalu Eke.

President Tinubu, in a letter to the Senate, expressed hope for the prompt confirmation of Onwudiwe’s replacement, underscoring the importance of adhering to the provisions of the CBN Establishment Act 2007.
