Presidency Reacts to Protests by Nurses in Lagos, Abuja

In response to recent protests by members of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) in Lagos and Abuja, the Federal Government has pledged to address the grievances raised by the healthcare professionals. Dr. Salma Anas-Kolo, the Presidential adviser on health, assured that the government is committed to resolving issues to ensure the continued dedication of medical personnel to national service.

The protests were sparked by revised guidelines from the Nursing Council, which mandated that applicants seeking certificate verification from foreign nursing boards must have two years of post-qualification experience. NANNM members expressed dissatisfaction, seeing it as an impediment to their pursuit of career opportunities and raised concerns about welfare, salary scale, staff shortages, and other rights.

Dr. Salma Anas-Kolo emphasized the importance of nurses and midwives in healthcare delivery, acknowledging their crucial role in patient care. She stated that the government is actively working to improve the working environment and welfare of healthcare workers, addressing concerns raised by human resources.

“We are committed to creating an enabling environment and addressing areas of conflict. Our goal is to motivate nurses and midwives, ensuring the happiness of all health workers,” said Salma-Kolo, emphasizing the government’s dedication to enhancing healthcare, maternal and child health services in the country.
