Premier League Referee David Coote Dismissed Following Misconduct Investigation

Premier League referee David Coote has been dismissed by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) following a thorough investigation that determined his actions were a serious breach of contract. The decision, announced yesterday, comes after weeks of scrutiny surrounding the official’s conduct.

Coote was initially suspended last month after a video surfaced online showing him allegedly making derogatory remarks about Liverpool and former manager Jürgen Klopp. The incident triggered an internal investigation by PGMOL, which concluded that Coote’s position was untenable.

“Following the conclusion of a thorough investigation into David Coote’s conduct, his employment with PGMOL has been terminated today with immediate effect,” read the PGMOL statement.

The Football Association (FA) also launched its own investigation after Coote’s suspension on November 11, citing additional allegations of misconduct. On November 13, PGMOL acknowledged these claims and stated they were treating them with the utmost seriousness.

Adding to the controversy, a video published by The Sun reportedly showed Coote appearing to snort a white substance during his time as a match official at Euro 2024. UEFA suspended the 42-year-old and initiated its own investigation into the matter.

Further allegations emerged on November 27, when the FA announced it was looking into claims that Coote had discussed booking a player with a friend the day before officiating a match. Coote denied these allegations.

Despite the dismissal, PGMOL emphasized its continued commitment to Coote’s welfare. “Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us, and we remain committed to his welfare,” the organization said in its statement.

Coote retains the right to appeal the decision.
