Power Minister Apologises as Electricity Supply Worsens Nationwide

 

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, has apologised to citizens for the ongoing electricity shortages and frequent outages affecting homes and businesses across the country.

 

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Adelabu acknowledged the impact of the disruptions, describing them as a temporary but difficult situation.

 

“I want to apologise… for this temporary issue that is leading to hardship being experienced,” he said.

 

The minister attributed the situation in part to seasonal conditions, noting that the dry season and extreme heat have intensified pressure on the power system, affecting economic activities including schooling and industrial operations. He added that some of the underlying challenges are outside the government’s direct control.

 

Despite the setbacks, Adelabu said efforts are ongoing to restore stability in the sector. He stated that authorities are working continuously to return electricity supply to previous performance levels recorded in 2025.

 

According to him, improvements in both power generation and distribution are expected in the coming weeks. He also projected that national generation capacity could reach 6,000 megawatts before the end of the year.

 

The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing structural issues in the sector, including gas supply constraints that have affected thermal power plants.

 

Earlier in March, the Nigerian Independent System Operator linked declining power generation to persistent gas supply challenges, a factor the government says it is actively working to resolve.
