Oyo Teacher Beaten to Death by Students Over Gambling Dispute
A teacher at Soun High School in Oyo, Mr Fatai Adegoke, has died after being brutally attacked by students while trying to stop them from gambling during school hours. Eyewitnesses say the confrontation escalated when the students turned violent, leaving Mr Adegoke with multiple injuries, including broken limbs. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
In a statement, a group of concerned educators described Mr Adegoke as “a dedicated and disciplined professional whose life was cut short in the line of duty.” They condemned the attack as not only an assault on an individual teacher but on the teaching profession as a whole, calling on the Nigeria Union of Teachers, TESCOM, and law enforcement to bring the perpetrators to justice. They also urged that the parents of the students be held accountable for failing to instill discipline.
The educators highlighted the incident as a symptom of moral decline in schools and homes, stressing the urgent need for stronger safety measures, moral education, and enforcement of discipline in public schools. Efforts to reach the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, for confirmation were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. Reports suggest the students involved have gone into hiding, fueling public outrage and renewed calls for better protection of teachers.
