“Only a Fool Hell-Bent on a Suicidal Path Can Challenge Tinubu in 2027” — Shettima
Vice-President Kashim Shettima has said any opposition figure planning to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election is embarking on a futile and self-destructive political mission.
Speaking on Friday at the 15th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, Shettima dismissed potential challengers as lacking both credibility and strategy.
“Only a fool hell-bent on a suicidal path or an outright imposter can dare to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 election,” the vice-president said. He, however, acknowledged Nigeria’s democratic space, noting that individuals are free to contest elections.
Shettima stressed that electoral success is not determined by online popularity or public noise, but by structure and strategy. “Elections are not won by noise or nostalgia. Elections are not conducted on Facebook or Twitter. They are won by coalitions, credibility, and conviction,” he said.
He added that President Tinubu’s experience remains a major advantage for the ruling party. “The experience of our president is our shield, and the lessons of the past are our guide. 2027 is not a gamble; it is a responsibility, and by the grace of God, it will bring a renewable blessing,” Shettima stated.
Despite his confidence, the vice-president cautioned the APC against complacency, warning that internal failures pose greater risks than external opposition.
“Rome was not destroyed by outside invaders; it was destroyed by the complacency of the Romans. To succeed is much easier than to maintain success,” he warned.
Shettima urged party leaders to consolidate the APC’s gains nationwide, highlighting the party’s growing strength across the six geopolitical zones. He also pointed to increased influence in states strengthened by recent defectors and new political entrants.
The vice-president concluded by calling on party members to remain vigilant and united as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually take shape.
