Okuama President-General Dies in Military Detention
The Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State has been thrown into mourning following the death of its President-General, Pa James Oghoroko, who reportedly died in military detention after alleged torture and inhumane treatment.
Oghoroko, alongside other community leaders, was arrested by the Nigerian military between August 18 and 20, 2024, in connection with ongoing tensions following the demolition of Okuama community after the killing of 17 soldiers. Those arrested included Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo, Chief Belvis Adogbo, Dennis Okugbaye, Pa Anthony Ahwemuria, and Mrs. Rita Akata.
News of Oghoroko’s death was disclosed during an emergency meeting held by Okuama leaders. Community representatives also revealed that another detained leader, Pa Dennis Okugbaye, is reportedly in critical condition at an undisclosed military facility.
In August, the Okuama community, through its legal team led by Olorogun Albert Akpomudje (SAN), filed multiple suits against the Nigerian Army seeking redress for the arrests and detentions. The suits, which include claims of N100 million in damages for illegal detention, have been consolidated and are pending at the Federal High Court in Warri. The court was scheduled to hear a bail application for the detained leaders on December 9, but the tragic news of Oghoroko’s death emerged on December 4, just days before the hearing.
Reacting to the incident, lead counsel Akpomudje described the news as deeply disturbing and stated that he would consult with Oghoroko’s family and legal team to determine the next steps.
The death of Pa James Oghoroko has plunged the Okuama community into grief, with widespread anger and sadness over the circumstances of his passing. Family members are in mourning, and youths in the community have been seen discussing the tragedy in hushed tones, expressing frustration over the ongoing detentions and the loss of their leader.
