“Ojukwu Told Me that First Biafra Agitation Was Necessary, Second Is Not” — Orji Kalu

Abia North Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has shared details of his discussions with the late General Chukwuemeka Odumegu Ojukwu, leader of the first Biafra movement, during the final years of Ojukwu’s life.

In an interview on Arise Television on Sunday, Kalu said Ojukwu considered the first Biafra struggle necessary but did not support a second agitation.

“I was with Ojukwu in the later days of his life, and his wife, Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu, can attest to my regular visits. The General also stayed in my village at times,” Kalu said. “He told me the first struggle for Biafra was necessary; the second is not.”

Kalu criticized ongoing separatist efforts, highlighting the harm caused by violence to Igbo communities and businesses.

“Even if some groups want Biafra, they should lay down arms and pursue their goals through dialogue, negotiation, and a referendum,” he said. “Continuing to destroy Igbo land and disrupt commerce only harms the people. We need peace and practical solutions.”

Responding to claims questioning his Igbo identity, Kalu affirmed he is “full-blooded Igbo” and closely connected with Ojukwu and his family.

He emphasized the urgency of restoring stability and economic activity in Igbo regions. “There is no more commerce in Igbo land. Things are difficult. We must stop destroying ourselves and focus on peaceful resolution,” he stated.
