Obi Refuses to Fully Commit to ADC, Sets Conditions

Former Anambra governor Peter Obi has confirmed that he remains a member of the Labour Party, even as he aligns with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition for the 2027 presidential election. Obi’s statement follows calls from ADC leaders for him to formalize his membership ahead of the next national contest.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai recently urged political figures who have not yet joined the ADC to make definitive decisions. Both Atiku and El-Rufai have formally registered with the party, emphasizing the need for all coalition members to take clear positions. Atiku, speaking to state chairpersons from across Nigeria, said there was no time for indecision in advancing the coalition’s objectives.

El-Rufai directly challenged Obi to formalize his membership, noting that prior arrangements between them anticipated registration after the conclusion of by-elections. He suggested that with the by-elections completed, there is no reason for further delay.

In a podcast interview with *Advocacy for Good Governance*, Obi clarified his stance. He said he continues to support the ADC coalition but remains a Labour Party member, citing concerns over the ADC’s lack of clear direction. He emphasized the need for agreement on fundamental issues such as rotation of offices, including the presidency, before he could fully commit.

Obi expressed confidence in senior ADC figures, including Atiku and former Senate President David Mark, describing them as capable of guiding the coalition. He stressed that his priority is effective governance, not personal ambition, and said he would remain engaged even if denied the presidential ticket within ADC.

The former governor’s comments follow speculation from media entrepreneur Dele Momodu that Obi may be considered as Atiku’s running mate in 2027. Analysts suggest that Obi’s reluctance to fully join the ADC is linked to concerns about contesting the party’s presidential nomination against established figures such as Atiku and former Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi.
