NYSC Corps Member Transforms Bayelsa School After Witnessing Pupils Drenched in Rain

A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Brown-Ofoeme Ebubechukwu Prosper, has breathed new life into Community Primary School, Swali, in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State by renovating four dilapidated classroom blocks—an effort sparked by a moment of compassion and a commitment to making a difference.

Prosper, who is serving with the Nigeria Police Force at the Bayelsa State Command Headquarters, was initially working on an anti-cultism campaign as his Community Development Service (CDS) project. But that changed dramatically after he visited the school earlier this year during a heavy downpour. Shocked by the sight of young pupils drenched in rainwater while trying to study in roofless classrooms, he decided to take on a more urgent mission.

“I was deeply disturbed by what I saw—children learning in flooded classrooms, with no roofs, ceilings, doors, or windows,” he said. “Some stood, others tried to protect their notebooks from the rain. It was a heartbreaking sight, and that day I knew I couldn’t walk away and pretend it didn’t matter.”

Abandoning his original campaign, Prosper consulted with the school’s headmistress and members of the local community to assess the needs and begin mobilizing support. Through determination and assistance from supportive individuals, he embarked on a renovation project that has now completely transformed the learning environment.

The work included re-roofing four classroom blocks, installing PVC ceilings, nine new doors, and 24 windows, and repainting the classrooms and administrative office. What was once a set of crumbling, unfit structures has become a safe, dignified space for education.

The project has attracted praise from both NYSC authorities and local officials. NYSC Bayelsa State Coordinator, Mrs. Okpalifo Obiageli Charity, and the Police Public Relations Officer for the Bayelsa State Command, DSP Musa Mohammed, have commended Prosper’s dedication and described his effort as a powerful example of the positive impact young Nigerians can make through the NYSC scheme.
