“No Concrete Evidence That Frequent Sex Lowers Prostate Cancer Risk” – Medical Expert
A medical expert, Dr. Sam Adegboye, has dismissed claims that frequent sexual activity reduces the risk of prostate cancer in men. Adegboye, who serves as the Assistant Chief Medical Officer and General Practitioner at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Ido-Ekiti, shared his views in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osogbo, Osun State.
According to him, scientific studies do not support the claim. He referenced the American Journal of Neurology, stating that available research lacks concrete evidence to establish a link between frequent sex and a lower risk of prostate cancer. He emphasized the importance of evidence-based medicine, noting that while some traditional beliefs support the idea, neurologists and medical experts do not.
Adegboye highlighted the importance of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, which helps assess prostate health. He explained that benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland, also referred to as benign prostatic hypertrophy. This condition, common in older men, can lead to urinary difficulties as the enlarged prostate presses on the urethra.
He clarified that while BPH is not cancerous, it can still cause significant discomfort. In severe cases, an enlarged prostate may obstruct urine flow, requiring medical intervention such as catheterization. He further explained that PSA levels could be elevated due to various factors, including recent sexual activity, strenuous exercise, or surgery, potentially leading to false readings in prostate health assessments.
Adegboye urged men to undergo regular medical checkups and consult professionals for accurate diagnosis and management of prostate-related conditions.
