Nigerian Police Officers Accuse IPPIS Staff of Demanding N50,000 Bribe to Process Salary Increment After Promotion
Junior police officers from the Inspectorate cadre and rank and file, who were promoted in 2023, have alleged that staff members of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) are demanding N50,000 bribes to process their salary increments.
The officers, who spoke on this matter revealed their frustration with the IPPIS system, which was introduced by the Nigerian government in October 2006 to promote transparency and accountability in payroll management. Despite their promotions, these officers claim they are still being paid salaries corresponding to their former ranks unless they pay the demanded bribe.
“I’m a police officer and this information is about some staff members who are on IPPIS. We want well-meaning Nigerians to help us beg them. We have tried all our best, even the police authorities have reached out to them but no difference,” one aggrieved officer told Sahara Reporters
The officers reported that about 10,000 personnel were promoted in 2023. One officer, promoted to a confirmed Inspector in October 2023, disclosed, “I still receive the salary of my former rank. Last month, a few of us were paid the confirmed Inspector salary while many were not. We realized that those who were paid had bribed their way, each paying N50,000 to some persons in the IPPIS office.”
Another officer shared his ordeal, stating, “I was promoted in May 2023 to the rank of Inspector but I’m still earning the same salary as when I was a Sergeant. The promotion is only on paper and possibly my uniform as there is no increase in salary.”
The officers are now appealing to Nigerians and President Bola Tinubu to intervene, as they lack the means to pay the demanded bribe.
