Nigerian Cartel Leader Arrested for Smuggling Drugs into Korea

A Nigerian national, identified as 59-year-old K. Jeff, has been arrested in Lagos for allegedly leading an international drug cartel that has smuggled illicit substances into Korea over the past five years. The arrest, which took place on February 13, was the result of a collaborative effort between Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) and Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). In addition to Jeff, thirty-six other members of the cartel were apprehended.

The investigation began in 2021 when authorities in Korea identified cartel members attempting to smuggle drugs from Ghana. Information obtained from these suspects led to a joint operation with Nigerian authorities to locate the cartel’s headquarters. Jeff is accused of operating a drug trafficking network spanning five continents and employing tactics such as romance scams to deceive individuals, including Koreans, into transporting methamphetamine and other stimulants across borders.

This is not Jeff’s first encounter with law enforcement; he was convicted in Korea in 2007 for a significant role in drug smuggling and served a 12-month prison sentence before being deported to Nigeria in 2008. Since then, he is believed to have expanded his network across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas, engaging in the cultivation, manufacture, and distribution of illicit drugs.
