Nigeria Government Reacts to Failed Coup Attempt in Benin Republic
Nigeria has issued a firm response to the failed attempt to overthrow the government of the Republic of Benin, describing the incident as a serious disruption to the country’s constitutional process. The federal government released an official statement detailing its position after Beninese authorities confirmed that security forces had halted an early-morning effort to seize power on December 7.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria views the attempted takeover as a direct challenge to Benin’s political stability and the authority of its legitimate institutions. Spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa said Nigeria received the news with deep concern and immediately conveyed its position to the Beninese government. He emphasized that the act undermined the choices of citizens who have continued to participate in and support democratic governance.
The statement highlighted Nigeria’s recognition of the prompt actions taken by Benin’s security agencies, noting that their coordinated response prevented further escalation and ensured the safety of the country’s leadership. Nigerian officials also acknowledged the steps taken by Beninese authorities to secure key government sites and maintain order in the aftermath of the attempt.
In its reaction, Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to working with Benin through established regional frameworks. It urged member states of ECOWAS and the African Union to present a unified stance on the incident, stressing the value of upholding agreed political standards across West Africa. The government encouraged international partners to support efforts aimed at preserving stability in Benin and sustaining political continuity.
Nigeria also called on political actors within Benin to avoid actions that could heighten tensions and instead rely on lawful channels for addressing disputes. Authorities in Abuja assured the Beninese government of continued cooperation, particularly in areas related to security coordination, diplomatic engagement, and cross-border stability.
The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of Nigeria’s intention to work closely with Benin as both countries navigate the aftermath of the failed coup attempt and continue shared efforts toward a secure and predictable regional environment.
