Native Doctor Arrested for Attempted Rape of Client During Spiritual Cleansing for Marital Crisis
A traditional healer in Zimbabwe has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after a Rusape court found him guilty of attempting to r@pe a woman who had sought his help to resolve problems in her marriage.
The convict, 29-year-old Cain Mushayi, visited the 34-year-old woman at her home in Village Domborembizi on October 3, 2025. Prosecutors said he claimed that goblins were responsible for the instability in her home and convinced her that he could remove them through a cleansing ritual. Trusting his promises, the woman allowed him into her unfinished two-roomed house.
Inside, the situation took a disturbing turn. Mushayi instructed her to remove her trousers before using a burning stick in what he called a spiritual procedure. The act quickly escalated into violence as he pushed her to the floor and attempted to force himself on her. The woman fought back until she managed to overpower him, during which he ejaculated on her legs before fleeing the scene.
She later reported the attack, leading to his arrest and prosecution.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe warned members of the public to be wary of individuals posing as spiritual specialists, especially those who approach vulnerable people with unsolicited rituals. Authorities noted that the case highlights how predators exploit those experiencing emotional or marital difficulties.
The conviction has been described as a strong step toward tackling sexual offences committed under the cover of traditional or spiritual practices, with officials urging communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious behaviour promptly.
