“National Grid Fully Restored After Temporary Disturbance” – TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the full restoration of the national electricity grid following another collapse on Saturday morning. This incident, which occurred at around 8:15 a.m., plunged multiple cities into darkness.

TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, issued a statement confirming the successful repair and restoration efforts. According to the TCN, the disturbance was triggered by an explosion in a current transformer at the 330kV Jebba Transmission Substation. The protection system activated immediately, preventing the spread of fire and further damage to other equipment.

Engineers quickly isolated the faulty transformer and reconfigured the busbar system to restore power to the affected areas of the grid.

This collapse comes just days after a similar incident on Tuesday, continuing the pattern of frequent disruptions in Nigeria’s power supply. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last election, criticized the repeated grid failures, calling them a “national shame” and attributing them to poor leadership and inadequate policy implementation.

Nigeria’s power sector has faced numerous challenges over the years, including regulatory issues, gas supply shortages, and transmission bottlenecks. Despite the privatisation of the sector in 2013, which saw the transfer of power generation and distribution to private firms, the national grid continues to suffer from periodic collapses.

Efforts to reform and stabilise Nigeria’s power supply remain ongoing, with many calling for more robust measures to address the sector’s longstanding issues.
