National Assembly Considers Death Penalty for Vandals of National Assets

In response to escalating vandalism of critical national infrastructure, the National Assembly is contemplating a stringent measure: the death penalty for perpetrators who vandalize public assets. Senator Adamu Aliero, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and currently representing Kebbi State in the Senate, disclosed this during a press briefing.

Senator Aliero expressed deep concern over the persistent destruction of key national facilities, including power installations, railway tracks, airport facilities, and bridges. He emphasized the need for robust legislation to deter such criminal activities, proposing severe penalties to curb vandalism effectively.

“In the face of rampant vandalization affecting various sectors, including transportation and energy, the National Assembly is considering legislation that could potentially impose the death penalty on those found guilty of sabotaging public infrastructure,” Senator Aliero stated.

Honorable Blessing Onuh, a member of the House of Representatives, echoed these sentiments, advocating for the installation of advanced anti-theft mechanisms to safeguard national assets from further damage.

Recent incidents, such as the apprehension of vandals with a truckload of stolen railway tracks by the Nigeria Police Force, underscore the severity of the issue. Transportation Minister Alkali S’aid attributed several train derailments to these criminal acts, emphasizing collaborative efforts between his ministry and security agencies to prevent further vandalism.

“We are implementing extensive surveillance measures to protect our infrastructure from these destructive acts,” Minister S’aid affirmed.

The proposed legislation marks a significant step towards safeguarding Nigeria’s critical infrastructure, aiming to deter vandals through stringent legal consequences.
