Massive Defection Looms: “Wherever Kwankwaso Goes, We Will Follow,” – NNPP

In what could become a major realignment ahead of the 2027 presidential election, reports indicate that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, national leader of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), is on the verge of defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The development has sparked intense speculation and unease within opposition ranks, particularly in Northern Nigeria, where Kwankwaso commands a vast support base.

Speaking to newsmen Kano State NNPP Chairman Hashimu Dungurawa confirmed that party members would follow Kwankwaso wherever he goes, declaring unwavering loyalty to the former Kano governor.

“Kwankwaso is a big name. Aside from the fact that he has very large followers, there is no political figure in the North that currently has the kind of influence and capacity he does,” Dungurawa said. “If joining APC is for the betterment of this country, then may Allah take him there.”

Dungurawa cited Kwankwaso’s record in public service, including his tenure as Minister of Defence, Senator, and two-term governor of Kano State, arguing that his leadership is desperately needed at the national level.

This potential defection comes amid swirling reports that Kwankwaso is being considered for a top spot in President Bola Tinubu’s camp, possibly even as running mate in 2027. While the presidency has not confirmed the reports, sources within the APC confirmed that negotiations are advanced, and Kwankwaso could formally join the ruling party “any moment from now.”

In a dramatic twist, APC National Chairman and former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje reportedly resigned on Friday to clear the way for Kwankwaso’s entry into the party. Ganduje and Kwankwaso have long been considered fierce political rivals in Kano State, and insiders say Ganduje refused to welcome Kwankwaso into the APC fold.

Ganduje’s resignation underscores the high stakes involved in this political maneuvering. His tenure as APC chairman was expected to bolster the party’s position in Kano and counter Kwankwaso’s growing influence, but instead the APC in the state has struggled with internal divisions, affecting its performance in the 2023 elections.
