“Look Me in the Face, Tell Me What’s Wrong” — Tinubu Urges Nigerian Youths to Speak Up
President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerian youths to engage directly with his administration, assuring them that their voices matter and their concerns will be addressed. Speaking at the inauguration of the National Youth Congress Planning Committee at the State House in Abuja on Monday, Tinubu encouraged young people to speak honestly and without fear.
“Look at me in the face, tell me whatever you think is wrong and the way you want things done,” the President said. “We’ll try to implement all of it as long as it is for the prosperity of this country.”
The President’s comments reflect his administration’s broader commitment to youth inclusion in governance, aligning with his Independence Day pledge to host a 30-day National Youth Conference. The initiative aims to address core issues such as unemployment, education, and political participation, giving young Nigerians a platform to shape national policy.
Acknowledging the country’s economic challenges, Tinubu said Nigeria is beginning to see positive changes. “When we started, it looked so foggy, dicey, and hopeless. We were fetching water from a dry well,” he said. “But today, the economy has turned the corner; prices are falling, confidence is improving, and investors are looking in.”
He urged the committee to focus on opportunities in technology, agriculture, and entrepreneurship, stressing that youth empowerment must be a national priority. “Let’s employ technology every way possible, let’s look at our farming conditions, let’s hear what we can do to empower youths in their firm spirit,” Tinubu added.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to youth engagement and encouraged young Nigerians to participate in shaping future policies through the upcoming confab. Committee member Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, applauded the initiative but stressed the importance of keeping the process free from political interference.
The 30-day National Youth Conference will include virtual consultations, regional sessions, and a final week-long conference in Abuja. The planning committee includes representatives from government ministries, civil society organisations, and international development partners. With the committee now inaugurated, preparations are in full swing to deliver a youth-led vision for national progress.
