Labour Leaders Cut Water Supply to Senate, House of Reps Buildings Amid Nationwide Strike
In compliance with an indefinite strike declared by organized labor, members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), have ceased water supply and other services to the National Assembly buildings.
The disruption, confirmed by Daily Trust, saw workers halting all official activities at the National Assembly and blocking its gates with two buses.
The strike action comes as a response to the federal government’s refusal to raise the minimum wage above N60,000. Consequently, electricity and water supplies to the buildings housing the Senate and the House of Representatives, as well as other facilities within the National Assembly complex, have been disconnected.
Efforts by National Assembly leadership to prevent the strike were unsuccessful, with labor representatives stating on Sunday that they lacked the authority to call off the action. They affirmed their commitment to proceeding with the industrial action as planned.
