JUST IN: U.S. Revises Visa Policy for Nigerians, Limits Non-Immigrant Visas to 3 Months, Single Entry Amid Reciprocity Review

The United States has imposed new restrictions on non-immigrant visas issued to Nigerian citizens, reducing their validity to just three months and limiting them to a single entry. The U.S. Department of State announced the immediate implementation of the policy on Tuesday, a move expected to impact thousands of Nigerians, including students, businesspeople, tourists, and families who regularly travel to the U.S.

According to the statement, the change applies to most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visa categories and is part of a broader global review of visa reciprocity arrangements. Visas issued before July 8, 2025, will remain valid under their original terms and will not be affected by the update.

The U.S. government emphasized that the decision is based on maintaining the integrity of its immigration system and aligning visa policies with global security and technical standards. Criteria considered in the review include the use of secure travel documents, measures to prevent visa overstays, and the sharing of relevant security and criminal information between governments.

The statement also reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to its relationship with Nigeria, noting that the countries share mutual interests in security and economic cooperation. The U.S. commended the Nigerian government’s efforts to meet international standards and expressed a willingness to continue working together to address outstanding concerns.

Nigerian travelers were urged to comply with visa regulations, ensure the authenticity of their travel documents, and remain mindful of the conditions attached to their entry into the United States. Despite the new restrictions, the U.S. reiterated its dedication to fostering educational, business, and cultural exchanges with Nigeria and encouraged ongoing collaboration with Nigerian officials to ensure safe and lawful travel.
