JUST IN: Tinubu Declares Nationwide Security Emergency, Launches Major Police, Military Recruitment Drive
President Bola Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency in response to rising violent attacks across several states, unveiling sweeping measures that include a major police and military recruitment drive. In a statement issued Wednesday night, Tinubu emphasized the urgent need for a coordinated response, stating that “the times require all hands on deck.”
The Nigeria Police Force has been authorized to recruit an additional 20,000 officers, bringing the current recruitment drive to 50,000 personnel. The Nigerian Army will also expand enlistment to strengthen its presence across multiple operational areas. To accelerate training, NYSC camps will be temporarily used as police training centers alongside upgraded national facilities.
Police officers recently withdrawn from VIP duties are now required to undergo crash reorientation courses before deployment to high-risk communities. The Department of State Services has been instructed to deploy trained forest guards against terrorists and bandits, with authorization to recruit additional personnel for forest security operations.
Tinubu praised security agencies for recent successes, including the rescue of 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi State and 38 worshippers abducted in Kwara State. He confirmed ongoing efforts to free students still held hostage in Niger State and others in captivity.
The President called on the National Assembly to review the legal framework for state policing and urged governors to reassess remote boarding schools without adequate protection. He encouraged places of worship in vulnerable areas to secure constant security support and assured backing for states with local security outfits. Tinubu also highlighted the role of the Livestock Ministry in resolving herder–farmer conflicts, urging herders to embrace ranching, end open grazing, and surrender illegal firearms.
Extending condolences to families affected by recent attacks in Kebbi, Borno, Zamfara, Niger, Yobe, and Kwara States, Tinubu also honored fallen security personnel, including Brigadier-General Musa Uba. Reassuring Nigerians of the government’s commitment, he warned that any attempt to test the administration’s resolve should not be mistaken for weakness. He called on citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative, stressing that unity and shared responsibility are key to overcoming the country’s security challenges.
“Let us stand together in purpose and strength to defend our freedom and values,” the President said. “Together we shall win.”
